Maretha Hattingh

Maretha van der Walt (b. 1987, Johannesburg) is a composer, violinist and teacher, currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She completed her Bachelors in Music and Honours Bachelors in Music (cum laude) at the University of Stellenbosch, with main focus on composition under Prof. Hans Roosenschoon.

She is especially fond of writing for the string family and has a huge interest in the nature of sound and how to organically apply it to her compositions. Her interest in the natural quality of sound led her to study in Oslo, Norway, for the first six months of 2011.  There she studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music, with Prof. Lasse Thoresen, a pioneer of the French Spectral Composers. She did courses in microtonal composition, overtone singing and aural analysis of sound.

Maretha will be relocating to Bristol, UK, with the aim to further her studies in music composition in 2015.
